Christmas Nostalgia

by Raegan Densmore

The Christmas season, I always yearn for. The memories that I have had that I will never forget, and overall great joy engulfs me when December rolls around. From visuals, to tastes, family, and moments made and remembered. If there is anything pleasant about when the cold weather starts to hit, it is that the Christmas season is arriving. Here are some of my favourite little things about the holiday season.

Candy cane and peppermint are my favourite flavours of Christmas time. I love making a warm hot chocolate and placing a candy cane inside. Candy cane ice cream is one of the best flavours of ice cream in my opinion as well. The crunch of the mini pieces along with that cool, tasteful flavour, it is amazing. I also enjoy just a simple candy cane as well, minus the stickiness. On Christmas day, when my family all come downstairs, it is quite common to find our Christmas tree decorated with many candy canes. I recently bought a peppermint coffee creamer out of that craving I had, however, it has led me to discover that I do not think I really enjoy peppermint iced coffee, or I just did not like the creamer. Regardless, the peppermint flavour and candy canes are very enjoyable, especially in the Christmas season.

Next is Christmas media. By this I mean, music and movies. I thoroughly love choir or jazz Christmas music, it is my favourite. It feels more magical and old fashioned, suiting the Christmas aesthetic. When it comes to movies, I enjoy older ones too. My mother always makes us watch Elf every year, it is tradition at this point. I used to watch a lot more movies when I was younger, maybe I will watch more this season. It is very nostalgic, I remember specific moments in previous Christmas seasons in my living room with my family, watching Christmas movies; Elf, Walt Disney films, and more.

This is a view that is controversial to many; I enjoy snow. I despise driving in it, however the view, aesthetic, and Christmas feeling it brings is truly delightful. Snow is much more enjoyable than rain in my opinion, this is coming from someone who hates the cold. It is much more beautiful, and when picturing the Christmas weather, typically it is snowy out. I remember when there used to be white Christmases. Every year it seems so close, maybe it will even snow on Christmas Eve, but then you look out the window on Christmas day and your eyes are met with plains of green and brown. It is quite gross. Maybe one Christmas, it will be white again.

Lastly, some of my favourite things to ever exist, regardless of the time of year, are lights. However, the best time to see lights is in the Christmas season. Christmas lights are one of the most beautiful inventions ever. The colours, the designs, how they decorate houses, rooms, trees, cities, and more. They are magnificent. Sometimes, my family and I will take a trip to go see some decorated houses. We did this last year, however it seemed as though my mother and I were the only ones that enjoyed it, as my brothers complained they were bored. I had my own tree at home that my mom would usually put up for me because I waited too long to do so. Although this was the case, I always insist on decorating it. I had this box of Christmas lights under my bed that I would use, not only one the tree but around my room some years as well. My Grandmother also gave me light up, colour-changing candles as well that I would set on my window sill. Decorating my room and filling it with lights was always my favourite.

This year, I do not return home until December 22nd. Which is literally, three days before Christmas day. Some of these things I will and have been enjoying this year, however it is definitely not the same. The Christmas season is by far, better with family. That is what Christmas is about, of course. I believe that the nostalgia that comes with the Christmas season also makes it different in Toronto. Sure, it is lovely here in the big city, but ultimately, it is much more enjoyable at home where it has always been, with family.
