Warm Summer and Warmer Welcome

by Rachel French

Rachel is a guest author who we hope will become a regular.

In late June, on a day where the humidity drove the temperature to a balmy 38 degrees Celsius, my husband Phil and I left Ontario and made the move to a beautiful home and property in Noel Shore. We were seeking the laid back and peaceful east coast lifestyle we’d heard so much about.

I’m enthralled by the beauty of the land and the bay in my own backyard, but what astounds me most is the kindness and warmth we’ve encountered from everyone we connect with in the community. We felt immediately welcome by neighbours who stopped by to introduce themselves and offer help of any kind at any time. I was even invited to milk cows which was an incredible experience having been a city gal all my life!

Phil transferred to Home Hardware in Debert and has been accepted and embraced by his crew, making it a very easy transition. Everyone has been quick to share the location of great Nova Scotia beaches, hikes, and restaurants. Looking for some exposure to local delights, I was put in touch with the East Hants Historical Society and was offered a job at the Lower Selma Museum and Heritage Cemetery as a museum interpreter. I find the exhibits really interesting, and the guests provide even more help to me than I provide to them in understanding the rich history of East Hants! I was also lucky enough to begin working at Burntcoat Head Park which is such a wonderful place full of friendly and knowledgeable staff.

The awe inspired by the tides and felt by the visitors is so infectious. 160 billion+ tonnes of water in and out of the bay twice a day! Phenomenal!! I want to continue to learn about and immerse myself in Noel and all of the surrounding area. I can sense the pride from the residents at living in such a stunning and close-knit community. We have yet to experience an east coast winter which I’ve been told will be…an adventure. But we are fully prepared knowing that we have the help and support of the incredible people all around us. We feel very much at home where we are, and count ourselves tremendously fortunate to be a part of this land and this community, and want to thank everyone who has made the start of this new chapter so amazing.
